Communicating connotative characteristics of significant work situations using idiomatic expressions
Abstract
Th ere are still no well-developed taxonomies of contextual and situational characteristics. We assume that important contextual characteristics are refl ected in idiomatic expressions. Th e aim of the research is to fi nd out how well situations translated only with idioms are similarly understood by diff erent people. To achieve this aim, the semantic diff erential method is used. Results show that diff erent people similarly understand situations described only by the means of idioms; hence idioms can be eff ective for the explication of contextual characteristics.
